Take 13 awarded grant to resurrect urban community film screenings

Take 13 believe now is the time to resurrect urban community film screenings. Their proposal for a project to pilot their community film project has been identified for support by The BFI Film Audience Network and Film Hub North with their Pilot Audience Development programme. Also supporting Take 13 is Bradford UNESCO City of Film. Take 13 is excited and encouraged to have the support of these organisations and is keen to continue developing its plan with their support.

Take 13’s pilot project aims to deliver a quite unique format for watching films that really involves people by encouraging community, inclusivity and ownership. The project is to be launched in the world’s first UNESCO City of Film, Bradford, who’s broad and varied community is perfect to test the plan.

Events echo the days when there were cinemas in every neighbourhood. Events won’t just feature the screening of films, they will be social occasions where people can get to know others from their communities and to share their love for film. Take 13 maintain that a really important aspect of their events is that those who attend get to choose the programme. And everyone attends can have their chance to choose and introduce their film choice. As an added feature of their events, Take 13 don’t disclose the name of the film to be screened until it’s about to start. The group believe this is the best way to see a film and be introduced to something new. Especially if it’s been presented by someone who has really thought about their choice and it means a lot to them.

Take 13 are concerned with community cohesion and social engagement and wish to reach out to communities and people from a wide variety of backgrounds, age groups and in areas which are either lacking in provision, where people are unable to afford cinema attendance or feel disconnected. So, to encourage this, Take 13 are partnering with neutral community-based venues,

The venues chosen to lead the pilot include:
– Eccleshill Mechanics Institute (starting this Saturday 6th December at 3pm)
– Bradford Resource Centre, Little Germany (Centred around asylum seeker project BIASAN)
– Bradford City Library Service (utilising several of their suitable venues)

Other venues will be launched in the weeks and months to come. Watch this space.

Take 13 are encouraging everyone to take part in their regular screening and have fun too.
